Is there stringy, rust-coloured, jelly-like slime on the inside of your well or pumping system? Does your water smell like rotten eggs? If so your well and water system needs to be chlorinated and disinfected.

Bacteria growth in a water well and associated components can be a natural occurrence or it can be a result of poor well construction, hook up, or well maintenance. Yearly water analysis is recommended to identify the presence of these harmful bacteria. Once the analysis has been completed and bacteria has been identified the well and household system should be disinfected.

The location and type of water well you have will also determine the probability of the presence of harmful bacteria. Dug wells as an example are susceptible to contamination from overland water flow carrying bacteria found on the surface. We see quite a few dug wells that are not sealed off to prevent rodents and reptiles from entering the well. Because of their nature of construction dug wells should tested regularly and inspected for foreign material.

Drilled wells when constructed properly are generally the best way to ensure a clean source of water but they can also be affected by bacteria growth. Older constructed wells may have lost the seal to the ground around and will allow surface water to enter the well bore. Well heads that are at or below ground level will allow foreign bodies to enter the well bore.

          Well chlorination, or "shocking," involves treating your well and distribution plumbing with a concentrated chlorine solution. It eliminates harmful bacteria, bio-films, algae, and odor-causing iron/sulfur bacteria.

          You should shock your well if a water test returns a positive result for Total Coliforms or E. coli, if you notice a sudden unpleasant taste or "rotten egg" smell, or after any mechanical work or repairs have been done inside the well.

          No. During the disinfection process (which usually requires 12 to 24 hours), the water contains high concentrations of chlorine and is unsafe for drinking, cooking, bathing, or watering plants.

          Shocking is an excellent corrective treatment to clear out immediate contamination. However, if your well suffers from ongoing surface water intrusion or structural vulnerabilities, we recommend installing a permanent solution like a UV Sterilizer.

          The initial chemical application and line flushing take a few hours, followed by a mandatory "rest" period of 12-24 hours for the chlorine to work. Afterward, the system must be thoroughly flushed until the water runs clear and chlorine-free.

          When performed by our government-certified professionals, the chemical ratios are carefully calculated to prevent damage. DIY shocking with improper ratios can corrode pump components, wire insulation, and household fixtures.

          Yes, we highly recommend scheduling a follow-up bacterial water test roughly 5 to 7 days after the chlorine has been entirely flushed from the system to confirm the treatment was 100% successful.

          Yes, if the smell is caused by harmless sulfur-reducing bacteria living inside the well or pressure tank, professional chlorination will neutralize them and eliminate the odor.
